Born in 1946 Tokunaga Futao became a presence in Japanese classical music during a long and impressive career. He worked as concertmaster for Japanese orchestras and played a lot on stages all around the world. Tokunagas deep sound, careful playing and emotional style influenced string players, in Japan. His 80th birthday memorial performance brings together friends, famous soloists and top chamber musicians for a big and varied program that honors his work.
The concert begins with conductor Junichi Hirokami guiding the Special Festival Orchestra through Aram Khachaturians Violin Concerto in D minor. The music bursts, with power and deep colorful orchestration. Then violinist Fumiaki Miura and pianist Maika Miura take the stage. They play three cherished works by Fritz Kreisler—Joy of Love, Sorrow of Love and Beautiful Rosmarin. Their performance carries the spirit of early 20th-century violin music. Every note feels delicate, full of emotion and timeless.
